At The Lygon Arms, you can visit the suite that Oliver Cromwell stayed in the night before the Battles of Worcester in 1651. John Wesley preached in the church of St. Michael, the east window of which contains some splendid 15th Century glass, judged by some to be the best in the Cotswolds and reputed to have come from Hailes Abbey at the Dissolution. William Morris attended church services here when he came to Buckland in the 19th Century and was so impressed by the glass that he personally paid for its re-leading.

In the 17th century, Dormy House went by the name Willersey Hill Farm, and its inhabitants, rather than enjoying fantastic food and indulgent spa treatments, spent most of their time cultivating the surrounding land. William Morris attended church services here when he came to Buckland in the 19th Century and was so impressed by the glass that he personally paid for its re-leading.

Over the years it has gone through many changes and played an important role in the village; providing food, drink and accommodation for people and horses. Having fallen in love with the building, Annie Fox-Hamilton took over ownership of the Lion in late 2011 and spent 6 months on a major renovation of the building and grounds. We were determined not to lose any of the original quirky charm; we unearthed a lot more than we had anticipated such as Mickey Mouse – the vintage wall painting in Room 1 we couldn’t bear to lose.Following the renovation of the building and grounds The Lion Inn at Winchcombe has been given a new lease of life transforming it into a place that we would like to visit – friendly; pampering; great local food; wine; ales; child and dog friendly; comfortable beds and attractive, relaxing rooms. The Lion Inn is the sort of place you could walk into on your own or come with friends and family for coffee and cake, bar snacks, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner, stay the night or the week and know that you will receive a warm welcome and be well looked after.

We often have enquiries for camping from people walking the Cotswold Way, and occasionally from those walking from Lands End to John O’Groats. All are welcome, subject to availability. Nestled in Buckholt Wood on the north part of the site, there are three large fields easily able to cope with groups of thirty to seventy campers. These can be booked separately or together for larger groups or events. Each site is equipped with a cooking shelter and altar fire. A further site consists of four terraced spaces on the hillside which are suitable for smaller tents and are ideal for smaller expedition groups. There are a number of water taps situated close to the sites and the recently refurbished main toilet and shower block is close by. The campfire circle, chapel and a washing up shelter are also situated on this part of the site. In Daniels Grove there is space for up to two more groups of about forty people. Here, set in grassy clearings close to the banks of the stream, there is a real feeling of being somewhere remote, while still having the convenience of running water and a small toilet and shower block close at hand. These sites are popular with smaller groups and those who want their participants to work in small teams. The area is also ideal for practicing survival skills, including shelter building. Camping equipment can be hired on site.  We now operate a minimum two day booking for Party tents, Patrol tents and Small Sleeping tents. This means that even you only require equipment for one day, you will be charged for two days. Washing, Toilet and Shower facilities Both the main site and the Grove have a toilet block with separate ladies, gents and disabled facilities. The toilet blocks have showers and hot running water, for which there is no extra charge. We encourage all groups to take responsibility for keeping the block clean. Washing Up shelter Situated between the main car park and the bottom field, there is a shelter which contains two large sinks which are ideal for washing up. The sinks have cold running water, and there is also a hot water boiler within the shelter. A small fridge and freezer are also situated here, but all of these facilities are for the use of all campers and day visitors on site. Water On the main site there are water stand pipes situated on the top and bottom sites. In the Grove, there is also a tap on the exterior of the toilet block. Altar fires and Wood With the exception of campfire circle, all fires on site must be in altar fires. As a site we can provide these although there is a limited number. A small number of grates are available, although we would encourage you to bring your own whenever possible. Wood is available in Buckholt wood, which surrounds our main site, and in our own woodland in Daniel’s Grove. Only dead wood can be used for fires, and no living trees may be felled or damaged in any way.

One of the first purpose-built hotels in Europe, Queens Hotel was built on the site of the old Sherborne Spa, meeting the demands for appropriate lodgings from higher echelons of society of the time. The hotel was declared then, as now, as ‘one of the noblest buildings of its kind in Europe’. A fine example of neo-classical architecture, with its imposing white façade of Roman temple scale, tall Corinthian order columns, carved cornices and Georgian windows, the hotel was one of a number of imposing landmarks conceived by Robert Jearrad and his brother Charles, who modelled the hotel on the Temple of Jupiter in Rome. Queens Hotel was opened on the 21st of July 1838, named in honour of Queen Victoria whose coronation fell in the same year. While she has predominantly retained her purpose as a fine hotel, gratified by the visits of such eminent figures as General Sir Charles Napier, Edward Elgar and Sir Arthur Conon Doyle, she has also served as a billet for officers of one of the Gloucestershire regiments and Gordon Selfridge came to stay at one time during the war. The hotel has been listed as a Grade II English Heritage building since 1955. It retains many of its original features including the wallpaper designed by Pugin, a key figure in nineteenth century architecture and design. Guests will also be delighted to encounter the hotel’s towering Georgian staircase, drawing guests upward over the remarkable crowned glass roof. Renamed Queens, the entire hotel has recently undergone a complete restauration, revitalizing her timeless richness, and reimagining her comforts with the latest technologies in preparation for a new chapter in her majestic history. Each of Queens’ 84 rooms are a classically elegant oasis, where respectful homage has been paid to the hotel’s majestic heritage while embracing contemporary, vibrant design and the integration of cutting-edge technologies. On entering your room, you’ll find an exceptionally comfortable bed dressed in Egyptian cotton linen, bathrobe, luxury toiletries, spa shower head, flat screen TV, air cooling, safe and complimentary Wi-Fi. We offer three splendid room types, with increasing levels of amenity to suit individual requirements: Superior, Deluxe and Renascence Deluxe Suites.

Thistledown is an organically managed family farm near Stroud, in the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Our farm covers 70 acres of pastureland, woodland and elderflower orchard, and borders Woodchester Park. We offer three different areas for camping, two of which are car-free. The fields have plenty of space and every tent can have their own campfire. The lower pastures have better facilities, whilst the Elderflower Orchard is accessible by car. The Orchard only has events toilets, but you are welcome to walk (4 mins) to use the washing up, composting toilets and showers in the lower pastures. We don’t have any allotted pitches, but the camping fields are very large and we restrict numbers so you will definitely be able to have your own space and camp as a group if required. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the amount of space you’ll have! Campfires are encouraged and you can have your own if you’d like. Firewood is usually delivered in the late afternoon, but this may not be the case midweek – it’s best to check at the shop if you are unsure. We set up Thistledown Café in 2016 (formerly Fieldfare Café) and have grown steadily since then. For most of the year we’re open Wednesday – Sunday (see Opening Times for details) and throughout the summer holidays we’re open every day, offering gourmet coffee, fine teas and a wide range of cold drinks as well as a selection of homemade cakes and patisseries. Food from our clay oven and barbecue is served Wednesday – Sunday. We stay open late on Fridays and Saturdays in the summer for wood-fired sourdough pizza nights – for most of our camping season this is both Friday and Saturday night. Booking is essential for all services as we serve a limited number of dishes – 01453 860420. We’re fully licensed (no BYO) and stock local beers, ciders, wines and even local gin! We also serve wines and prosecco from further afield!
